Phnom Penh, Cambodia – The Funan Techo Canal project, a historically significant undertaking for Cambodia's waterway transport sector, is scheduled to officially commence construction in November 2025, following the completion of impact resolution with affected citizens. This was confirmed by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport on June 10, 2025.
Smooth Impact Resolution Process
Mr. Phan Rim, spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, highlighted that the technical working group has actively worked to collect data, verify regulations, and mark boundary poles. As of the end of May 2025, the location for Section 2 in Kandal province has been fully completed. In Takeo province, 47 points were completed as of June 9, 2025.
Meanwhile, for Section 1 in Kandal province, spanning 21 kilometers from Prek Takeo to Prek Po, the impact resolution working group from the Ministry of Economy has finished measuring the affected land parcels. Currently, the ministry is continuing to implement relevant procedures to finalize compensation work.
Citizen Concerns and Government Commitment
However, some citizens living near the Funan Techo Canal project, such as Ms. Try Srey Leakhena, still express concerns and seek clearer information from authorities regarding compensation conditions. This citizen claimed that authorities had called citizens to thumbprint compensation letters, but clear conditions had not yet been specified. What citizens desire is decent housing and land for cultivation, similar to where they previously lived.
In response, Mr. Phan Rim affirmed that the construction company has prepared all necessary machinery to commence this momentous undertaking in November 2025.
A National Strategic Project to Transform Cambodia's Economy
The Funan Techo Canal project spans 180 kilometers, extending from the Bassac River to the sea in Kep province, with an estimated construction cost of USD 1.7 billion. This project is a joint investment between a Cambodian company (51%) and the Chinese company CRBC (49%) under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model. According to the plan, the Funan Techo Canal is expected to be completed in 2028.
This canal will play a crucial role in reducing reliance on transportation through neighboring country ports, as well as promoting the agricultural sector, eco-tourism, and the development of special economic zones along the canal. The project is expected to become a new driving force for national economic and social growth.
